Community Meeting

Shopping Dance

Materials

  • Device to play music

Greeting Objective

The learners will welcome each other as they shop in their “class store.”

Directions

  • The teacher will play music.
  • Students walk around the room and do the shopping cart dance (pretend to push cart and place things in cart.)
  • As they are “shopping” the music will stop. At this time, students will greet others as they pass by welcoming them to the store.

USE THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:

Tina:
“Good Morning, Anne. Welcome to 4D Grocery Store (or whatever the “store” is called)!”

Ann: “Good Morning, Tina. Thank you and how are you today?”

  • Music starts again.
  • Continue as time allows.

Survival Shopping

Engagement Objective

The learners will work cooperatively to pack items they would need if they were stranded on a deserted island.

Directions

  • Split class into 4–6 groups.
  • Explain to students that they will be stranded on a deserted island for one month, and they must choose 10 real items that they will take with them.
  • The students will work cooperatively to create a list that all participants agree upon. (Teacher determines time frame.)
  • The students will present the list to the class and explain why they chose the specific items.
  • Conclude by discussing the difficulties of “packing” items cooperatively as a group.

Inform

End your community meeting by informing your students about the schedule of the day.

Family Connection

Send home directions for the “Survival Shopping” activity. Encourage families to work cooperatively to create a list of items they would need to survive should they get stranded or involved in a natural disaster
