Community Meeting

When I Grow Up!

Greeting Objective

The learners will greet one another by stating what they would like to be when they grow up.

Directions

  • Students sit in a circle.
  • One student will begin by telling the class what they would like to be when they grow up.

Use the following format:

Maria: “Good morning class! When I grow up I want to be a veterinarian!”

Class: “Good morning, Veterinarian Maria!”

  • Continue until all students have shared.

Responsibility Parade!

Engagement Objective

The learners will identify jobs in the community and their specific responsibilities in order to participate in a Responsibility Parade.

Directions

  • Each student decides what job they would like to do in the community.
  • As a class, discuss the job responsibilities for each position.
  • The students will complete a worksheet about their job and responsibilities adding necessary items to the picture. (i.e., mailbag for
           a postal worker, hard hat for a construction worker.) Download the worksheet here.
  • Have students share their responsibility and then display pages within the classroom.

Optional Day 2

  • Students have a responsibility parade.
  • During the parade the students will have an opportunity to share what their job is and a responsibility that is involved. (i.e., as
           kindergartners enter a 3rd grade classroom, one by one, they introduce themselves by saying, “Good morning! I am a mailman and I
           am responsible for delivering letters and packages.”)
           HINT: Practice before parading!
  • Conclude by discussing the importance of jobs and the responsibilities involved.

End your community meeting by informing your students about the schedule of the day.
