Greeting Objective

The learners will greet each other by doing a respectful cheer about manners.


  • Students stand in a circle.
  • Students will think of a manner they use, as well as a silent action to represent that manner.
  • One student will begin.

Hint: Display the chart created in CM20 for a list of respectful manners.

Use the following format:

Kristy: “My name is Kristy and I like to be respectful!
Class: “Yea!”
Kristy: “I’ll use my manners!” (Pretends to open a door for someone)
Class: “Yea!”
Kristy: “Every day of my life.”
Class: “Every day of her life.”

  • Repeat until everyone is greeted.

Manners Calendar

Engagement Objective

The learners will create a “Manners Calendar” focusing on respecting others and themselves by using the book Monster Manners by Joanna Cole.


Part 1

  • The teacher will read Monster Manners by Joanna Cole.
  • As a class, discuss how Rosie used her manners and how that helped her family. Then discuss different ways to show manners in
           school, at home, and when out in public.
  • Talk about what words we use when using good manners (please, thank you, you’re welcome, hello).
  • Show the “Manners Cards.” Download cards here.

Part 2

  • Have one large “Class Manners Calendar” on display.
  • Have available copies of the “Manners Cards” for students to use or have markers available for students who wish to draw a picture
           of a way they used their manners the day before.
  • During the Community Meeting, the teacher will ask if anyone used their manners the day before. Choose one student to either pick
           a “Manners Card” and stick it to calendar or draw a picture of how they used their manners in the box for the day.
  • At the end of the month, there will be a complete “Manners Calendar” on display for all to see how the class is using good manners.
          Great to display at conference time!
  • Make a list of ways they can see, hear, and show kindness to all living things on a T-Chart.

Hint: Students may keep individual manner calendars.
