  • Students sit in a circle.
  • All students say the first part of the chant.

Class: “Lesley, Lesley, what do you see?”

Lesley: “I see kind students looking at me.”

Class: “Good morning, Lesley.”

  • Continue around circle until all students have been greeted.

A Kind Heart

(This activity will be ongoing throughout the day.)

Engagement Objective

The learners will discuss what compliments are and track the number of compliments in a school day.

  • Discuss what compliments are.
  • How did you feel when you were giving these compliments?
  • How did it feel when you got a compliment back?
  • Do we sometimes say things that hurt each other?
  • At this point, bring out the heart puzzle all put together. (Make 2 copies of the puzzle on 2 different colors, 1 to cut and 1 to match the
           pieces to.)
  • Explain that when we are saying nice things to each other, our heart is happy. (Show heart puzzle put together.) But when people say
unkind things to each other, our heart starts to break. (Show broken heart puzzle pieces all cut apart.)
  • Have students start giving compliments and begin to put the puzzle back together.  (The heart puzzle can be put up on a bulletin
board, so pieces can be easily put up or removed.)
  • Take the puzzle apart again and explain that as you see kind compliments given during the day, you will put one piece of the puzzle
back together and hopefully by the end of the day, the heart will be complete.

End your community meeting by informing your students about the schedule of the day.
