Community Meeting

Chugga-Chugga

Materials

  • Laminated letters to spell KINDNESS (optional)
  • Train Whistle (optional)

Greeting Objective

The learners will greet classmates as they form a kindness train. (You could also specify a particular pattern for the train. i.e., boy-girl, boy-boy-girl.)

Directions

  • Students sit at their desks
  • One person is the “engine.” The engine “chugs” until they are behind one person to greet.
  • Use Odakotah to tap next person on the shoulder. Enginer holds Odakotah as he/she leads the train.

Use the following format:

Engine: “Chugga, Chugga, Whoo, Whoo, get on board the kindness train. Chugga, Chugga, Whoo, Whoo, hop aboard as we say your name. Good Morning Jack.”

  • The greeted student “hooks up” behind the engine.
  • The “engine” and the “train car” continue until they are behind another person.
  • Use Odakotah to tap next person on the shoulder. Enginer holds Odakotah as he/she leads the train.

Engine and train car: “Chugga, Chugga, Whoo, Whoo, get on board the kindness train. Chugga, Chugga, Whoo, Whoo, hop aboard as we say your name. Good Morning Amber.”

  • The greeting continues until a class train is formed.

Stand Up, Sit Down

Engagement Objective

The learners will spell the word kindness through an interactive chant.

Directions

  • Students say and do the chant to spell the word “KINDNESS” (or just, KIND if you are short on time).

Use the following format:

(Write the letters on the board or display letters of KINDNESS on the wall.)

“Stand up, turn around, sit down, K”
“Stand up, turn around, sit down, I”
“Stand up, turn around, sit down, N”
“Stand up, turn around, sit down, D”
“We are kind kids you will see!”

(if you spell KINDNESS, use this ending)
“We are kind kids and we’re the best!”

Inform

End your community meeting by informing your students about the schedule of the day.
