Community Meeting

Brown Bear Greeting

  • Odakotah
  • Red pom poms
  • Jar (for a kindness jar)

Greeting Objective

The learners will greet each other using the “Brown Bear” chant.

  • Gather children in a circle on the floor with Odakotah.
  • Using the “Brown Bear” chant, substitute Odakotah for Brown Bear, and go around the circle using this
           as a greeting

Use the following format:

All: “Odakotah, Odakotah, what do you see?”
Odakotah: “I see a child with a blue sweatshirt starting at me!”
All: (Looking around for someine in a blue sweatshirt) “Hi Dan (wearing a blue sweatshirt).”

Continue until all have been greeted.

The Kindness Jar

Engagement Objective

The learners will be able to show they understand what constitutes a kind act.

  • Introduce the Kindness Jar by showing the jar and pom poms (the red pom poms stand for the kindness that comes from our heart).
  • Explain that each time you or one of the children witness a kind act, you will put a red pom pom in the jar. Make the connection to the
greeting, just like Brown Bear would “see” things.
  • Once the jar is full, explain that we will celebrate our kindheartedness in some way.
  • To launch this, ask a few children to stand up and demonstrate a kind act to either people, animals, or
the environment. After each demonstration, place a pom pom in the jar.

End your community meetings by informing your students about the schedule of the day.
